Drink: Unibroue Éphémère Sureau
Source: Unibroue, Chambly, Quebec
Size: 341 mL bottle x 6
This elderflower and berry-flavoured wheat ale from Unibroue is a beer that in some ways, evokes the English Strongbow and Black (dry cider with blackcurrant squash—concentrate syrup).
This is one of Unibroue’s “ales on lees”, meaning the beer is bottled with the naturally occurring yeast sediment, letting the beer further ferment. This imparts a natural cloudiness, and generally provides a richer taste than the more filtered or fined beers.
A grumous ruby in colour, this ale easily agitates and pours voluminous head if executed improperly.
Faint berry notes on the nose with a fruity, malt undertone.
The elderberries come through upon tasting, with homemade strawberry jam, and floral aromatics.
A clean finish with a slight pith bitterness, not unlike eating pomegranate.
A relaxing ale that evokes post-dinner herbal teas; suggested serving is in a tulip glass, if available.
Neither saccharine nor syrupy. Well worth experiencing.
