Drink: Nickel Brook Duplicitous Citra Dry-Hopped Gose
Source: Nickel Brook Brewing Company, Burlington, Ontario
Size: 375 mL bottle
Cost: $15.95 (1/4 bottles)
This offering as part of the Funk Summer Mix Pack from Nickel Brook is a curious creation. Boasting 0 IBUs (International Bitterness Units) and yet offering full hops flavour, it is true to its name.
(Incidentally, despite being more or less unagitated, Hoochsavvy’s bottle burst like Old Faithful upon opening, and continued to produce thin, tart head until it was poured into a glass. You’ve been warned.)
Lemon-straw in colour, and with effervescent and evanescent head, this Gose—a top-fermenting (that is, ale) beer brewed with 50% of the grains being malted wheat, hailing from Goslar in Germany—is slightly clouded in the glass.
On the nose, the lactobacillus hits with a sour tang, married with the pine and citrus of the Citra hops; the malt does not come through as much.
With a lush and rich mouthfeel, the ale evokes lemon zest coupled with its coriander and Himalayan sea salt.
A balanced finish that makes this beer taste more like a shandy or radler than a classic beer.
Duplicitous, yes. Delicious, too.
