This tar, cocoa-black lager yields a frothy head on the pour.

The roast malt imparts notes of toast, chocolate, and cocoa; the hops are somewhat absent in relation, or just deferentially complementary. (Why is it dark? Because the barley is roasted longer. However, like coffee beans, roasting takes out some of the flavouring elements in doing so.)

With a tang reminiscent of fresh-ground coffee and burnt toast, the roasting of the malt gives it a rich and robust flavour.

A surprisingly clean finish for such a dark lager, eschewing the finishes more customary to porters and stouts.

Overall a respectable and highly quaffable beer, and given its price, it seems more than worthy of its Power Performer status!

For when you want to get in touch with your dark side.

Hoochsavvy Grade: B+
