Drink: Lion’s Summer Ale
Source: Granville Island Brewing, Granville, British Columbia
Size: 473 mL tallboy
Following in the prodigious wake of the Lion’s Winter Ale, the Lion’s Summer Ale has big shoes to fill.
Mango-amber on the pour, this ale evokes a summer lagers with a touch of apple cider, generating only a light head.
Malt and pineapple are the first two notes on the nose, with a hint of citrus.
The pineapple and passionfruit juices added come through upon tasting, with a light mouthfeel; however, the fruit notes fall under the malt, ensuring that this beer stays firmly in beer territory, and out of the radler/shandy territory, which is to say that the concernedly manly men need not worry about the delicacy of the drink.
A light finish with only a trace of hops and pineapple on the tongue.
Although it fails to make as robust an impression as its winter forerunner, this ale still manages to do something new and exciting.
Serve liberally in hot weather.
