Drink: Shiny Pinot Cider
Source: Shiny Apple Cider, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario
Sugar: 50 g/L
Size: 473 mL tallboy
This unorthodox offering from Niagara-on-the-Lake offers all the tart sweetness of apples with a splash of pinot noir (10% of the volume)—origins unknown. A light ruby with a shade of fuchsia, this cider more closely resembles a sparkling wine than cider.
However, the cider comes through on the nose, with only a light hint of plum and raspberry from the pinot coming through as more aura than substance.
Light and smooth, the first taste is neither syrupy nor bone-dry. The cider comes through dominant in the taste, with a gentle touch of citrus and currant on the finish.
Though it’s a new twist in the cider category, evoking British ciders with a currant syrup twist, the cost is slightly prohibitive to make this your only tipple for the night.
Try it, and move on to the more jaw-dropping contenders.
